Transparency – A Business Issue with a Technical Solution

Transparency as a Critical Business Requirement

Transparency has become an established trend across industries, often addressed with technical solutions. Håkan, a Senior Consultant at Compose IT in Östersund, shares his experience with one of their major telecom and IT clients while en route to his next assignment. Operating in multiple countries, the client has made transparency a core requirement.

The Compose IT team in Östersund, led by Marita Öman, specializes in measuring and presenting network statistics. Their work focuses on analyses, solutions, and development projects in Network Performance Management, primarily using SevOne—a platform chosen for its extreme flexibility, scalability, and functionality. With over a decade of development responsibility for the client’s quality collection system, Compose IT serves as a Trusted Advisor. The team comprises solution architects, developers, and a project manager dedicated to meeting the client’s needs.

When is Transparency Relevant?

Transparency is not only beneficial internally—for tasks like network planning, understanding network load, or traffic load balancing to maintain high capacity—but also business-critical for sharing data and statistics with customers.

“Metrical data showing real-time usage and capacity is also used as the billing foundation for both direct customers and other operators, who also demand transparency,” explains Håkan Arvidsson.

For example, consider the global gaming industry, which relies on international network capacity from numerous telecom operators, demanding high availability in an extremely complex IT environment. With countless users and significant financial transactions occurring 24/7/365, gaming companies must ensure accurate data on capacity, quality, and utilization when billed for bandwidth usage.

The Solution: A Network Performance Management System

Using a Network Performance Management System built on the SevOne Data Appliance NMS, data is collected from all types of network equipment in the client’s infrastructure. The system stores, calculates, enriches, and presents this data as traffic statistics in real time.

“To make relevant data accessible, the system is multitenant, ensuring the right data is shown to the right customer while maintaining full data integrity,” Håkan explains.

The data is also exported in various formats—raw or enriched with metadata—depending on requirements. This allows traffic statistics to be integrated into other systems and portals for customers and the operator’s internal use. The operator leverages this data for troubleshooting, network planning, billing, fraud analysis, and upselling opportunities.

“To fully understand traffic statistics and their implications, you must analyze and calculate data, which requires an understanding of how an ISP operates and how network services are realized in an IP network,” adds Marita Öman, highlighting Compose IT’s role with this client.

Tailored Solutions That Support Business Goals

SevOne offers vast customization options, including the ability to create additional KPIs by combining metrics from multiple sources into custom calculations. For example, it can provide comprehensive traffic insights or response times for business-critical services or applications.

“One great example is monitoring an interface where you can see both ingress and egress but not total bytes. SevOne bridges this gap with synthetic indicators that combine values, providing a real-time view of total bytes. These synthetic indicators can also trigger alerts if there’s a deviation from the baseline or in comparison to other metrics like packet loss,” Håkan concludes.
