First, what is observability? Here we refer to the system’s ability to understand what is happening based on the data that is exposed. The system interprets status in a complex environment based on polling and collecting data.
Instana uses a single agent that manages sensors, small programs created to monitor each technology or building block in the application architecture. The agent configures, loads, and updates the sensors to collect configuration, changes, metrics, and events—all without manual instrumentation.

Instana collects data, metrics and telemetry, with 1-second granularity. The presentation then takes place with a “time-shift” view with a history of the status and dependencies of all included components. A real-time model of the application is thus created where all physical and logical dependencies are displayed.
