Adapt the information according to needs
We have a lot of information about how our IT environments are doing. An increasing challenge in larger organizations is how the information is made available. Depending on your role or task, you want the information presented in a way that suits your own department’s role or focus. Data tends to increase over time, which makes it increasingly important to both understand the information and be able to process and present it in a relevant way.
Technical perspective
Technology teams often want to be able to see the entire network and server park and what is happening in it. Smaller teams want to be able to zoom in and see only their selected parts, and application teams want to see what’s happening in their application. In addition to alerting, you also want to be able to use your tools for troubleshooting and orchestration.
Operational perspective
A common scenario is that operations management wants information presented at an overall level that provides the answer to questions such as: how does my delivery work? Are we meeting our SLAs and delivery times? Traffic lights are common.
A larger NOC often wants a washed alarm list where correlation and deduplication have been performed before presentation. Automatic or semi-automatic generation of incidents to ITSM tools is a frequent need. Enrichment of the information is often done with integration with the CMDB.
The service perspective
It is becoming increasingly common to want to visualize and report also from a service perspective. You want to see development and trends over time, and be able to anticipate problems before they occur.
Many companies often have most of what is needed to accomplish this on site. The big challenge is about bringing the systems together and integrating with ITSM tools and CMDB as well as orchestrating and visualizing.
