As our society becomes digital and different systems or products communicate with each other, large amounts of data are produced. Valuable data that provides insight through visualization and interpretation.

Simple and valuable monitoring of IoT devices

There are ways to get significantly more value out of your infrastructure and data by taking it to the next level and analyzing how it is doing. This could include wind turbines, machines, cranes, vehicles, oil platforms, bridges, premises or any kind of equipment that can communicate. Taking the temperature of the infrastructure throughout its entire life cycle becomes a business-critical process. Especially since it can cost millions of dollars if production or distribution stops due to some unreported deficiency.

By centralizing all information to one and the same point, it is possible to draw logical conclusions, correlate information against each other and notify the right person at the right time, both proactively and when it really matters.

Below we describe one of our customer projects and how you can create just this with the help of Compose Operation Platform (COP).

Monitoring IoT devices with Compose Operation Platform

Background and conditions

  • 12 000 unitus around the globe
  • All devices connected via the mobile network
  • Sensors that measure force, brake load, temperatures, etc.
  • Shared Data Lake with both structured and unstructured information
  • Action descriptions in PDF format
  • Manual reports

Challenges

  • Different data formats
  • Many different types of devices
  • Asset and inventory information scattered across different databases

Success factors

  • Goal- and quality-conscious demanders
  • Aspiring project members
  • Large amounts of data

Implementation

Through Compose Operation Platform (COP), we created a collection layer to collect all the information available in the Data Lake in an orderly and structured way. By normalizing the information, we were able to centralize all data in one interface.

We integrated COP with the existing inventory and asset systems and enriched the collected data with business information, SLA information and geographic positioning. We converted the previous data sheets for troubleshooting into a structured and searchable knowledgebase.

Using “Dynamic Event Management”, we were then able to classify incoming data and prioritize events based on severity, where keying can be done both on the alarm type, the device the alarm comes from and/or the time of day.

On top of this, we created a visually appealing GUI where you can easily see the most prioritized events and those that you should do something about. At the same time, you have both access to the device’s geographic location via Google Maps and a description of the action linked directly to the event that occurred.

The result

  • Inbox for Operation Center where alarms that need to be addressed are visible in real time
  • Access to map positioning and action description by clicking on the alarm row
  • Geographical overview with current alarm status
  • Important alarms are prioritized and visible
  • Information available for processing by the aftermarket
  • Previously unknown information about, for example, overload, worn brakes or other components becomes immediately available
  • Thanks to geo-positioning, messages can be sent to the nearest service or cooperation partner

Benefits

  • The solution is applicable to any connected device
  • Short implementation time
  • Real-time information available to multiple stakeholders
  • Right information, to the right person at the right time
  • Proactivity and control

Mobile connections provided new business opportunities!
