Present Network Reports for Hundreds of Interfaces in Just Milliseconds!

SevOne NMS is a renowned and powerful solution for network monitoring, capable of presenting comprehensive reports and extensive statistics. With its wide range of collection modules, SevOne can gather diverse time-series data at short intervals. Built to monitor the largest networks, it is trusted by some of the world’s leading telecom providers. Its customizable visualization options allow data to be displayed in tailored reports, such as TopN reports, which quickly present key metrics for various objects.

However, some scenarios require a bespoke solution to meet specific client needs.

A Bespoke Solution for a Client

One such case arose when a client needed specific measurements from SevOne combined with metadata from other systems—delivered in an intuitive, user-friendly format with extremely short lead times. The solution required real-time visualization of custom network reports for numerous objects.

To meet this challenge, we developed a custom interface and GUI. SevOne handled all data collection, normalization, and processing, while the custom GUI presented the data. This approach ensured that large datasets could be displayed in milliseconds.

Efficient Data Retrieval

SevOne offers two APIs for data retrieval: SOAP API and REST API. While SOAP is feature-rich, REST is faster and more modern. However, both APIs have limitations, such as retrieving only one metric per call, which can be slow for large datasets.

To overcome this, we built an interface that leverages SevOne’s internal API, significantly faster than both SOAP and REST. For example, it took just 5 seconds to retrieve an hour’s worth of data for 1,253 indicators. This approach should only be used with deep knowledge of SevOne’s architecture.

Metadata Enrichment

Fast data retrieval is only half the challenge. Metadata must also be enriched and delivered efficiently. Since “no chain is stronger than its weakest link,” we ensured metadata processing was as fast as data retrieval by caching all enrichment data. This pre-processed metadata, categorized and linked to indicators, was ready for instant client-side access.

To further optimize, cache files were generated on each collector and sent to a central server, where enriched data was aggregated for fast presentation.

Client Interface

With data pre-processed and cached, we developed a REST API to deliver the information to the client. This API ensured that clients received precisely the data they needed, while also handling functions such as authentication.

For the front-end, we created an Angular application. Thanks to pre-processed data, searching and sorting among thousands of indicators was both quick and user-friendly. Highcharts was used for rendering time-series data efficiently, even with massive datasets, offering near-limitless customization for visualizations.

This combination of components—from collection to presentation—resulted in a lightning-fast portal capable of displaying vast amounts of real-time data in milliseconds.
